NOLA2MoMA
Bed-Stuy Bar Crawl

September 10, 5:00pm-7:00pm
(rain or shine)

- Sponsored by -

Explore the rich history of Black bars in Bed-Stuy with food writer and cookbook author, Nicole A. Taylor. "Many of Bedford-Stuyvesant's restaurants and bars have a storied past, serving as vital community gathering spaces that nourished both body and spirit." says Taylor. This experience aligns perfectly with L. Kasimu Harris's "Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges" works featured in the New Photography 2025 Exhibition at MoMA

It will be a walking tour featuring Black-owned bars, all within a two mile radius. At each 20-30 minute stop, you can look forward to a complimentary light bite and/or cocktail. We also encourage you to support and patronize these Black-owned spaces by making additional purchases beyond what is provided.

Only 20 spots are available, rain or shine.

What To Expect

We'll start the crawl on the "stoop" of BEM books & more: 373 Lewis Avenue (across the street from Bklyn Public Library-Macon Branch). We'll be walking between stops, along the most gorgeous brownstone blocks of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

The crawl is about more than rum—it's about community. You'll meet locals, fellow food lovers, and business owners, and hear why I believe these restaurants and bars tell the story of the past, present, and future of Black Bed-Stuy.

A photographer will be snapping photos during the crawl to capture the fun! By joining us, you agree to be photographed and have your image shared on social media or in future event recaps.

Each stop will offer something special just for crawlers. Expect a mix of complimentary bites, Privateer Rum, discounted specials, and signature drinks and food for purchase. We encourage everyone to support the spots by ordering from the menu and tipping as well.

I'll send you email updates on the day of the crawl with any last-minute details and reminders.

Stops

BEM books & more

We'll chit-chat for a few and then take off at 5:15 sharp! Because Kasimu and I are both writers, it was fitting to start at the future home of the neighborhood's only bookstore dedicated to the culinary arts and more.

Peaches

Peaches is iconic and a Bed-Stuy institution. You aren't a local or haven't really experienced Brooklyn without multiple visits to the original Peaches and Peaches Hothouse.

FAQs

  • L. Kasimu Harris is a New Orleans-based artist. His series, Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges, (2018 - present) “bear witness to the Black genius that percolates from these watering holes.” For nearly two decades, I’ve hosted artists and chefs from the American South in my living room or neighborhood—the tradition continues.

  • The total distance is around 1.5 miles.

  • The Utica Avenue (A/C) MTA stop is fully ADA accessible. Since every NYC bar/restaurant  is a little different,  please reach out if you need specific accommodations—your comfort matters as much as the good time.

  • The B26 MTA bus or rideshare is available along the crawl.
